Wir essen und leben wohl (χορικό) Η καντάτα Christ lag in Todesbanden (Ο Χριστός κείται με τα δεσμά του θανάτου) είναι μια από τις πρώτες καντάτες του συνθέτη. Το λιμπρέτο της είναι ένας ύμνος του Λούθηρου. Κάθε ένα από τα επτά μέρη της καντάτας είναι και ένας στίχος του ύμνου, με τη μορφή variation. Ο Bach γράφει συμμετρικά: χορωδιακό – ντουέτο – σόλο – χορωδιακό – σόλο – ντουέτο – χορωδιακό. Στο κέντρο (4ος στίχος) είναι η μάχη ανάμεσα στη ζωή και στον θάνατο.
