The chorus focuses on improving singing techniques and making chords "ring" while at the same time simply having fun. We love it when a 4 part chord is correctly tuned and the chord just locks together and harmonics (or overtones) ring out loud and strong.
We compete every year in local contest as a mean of measuring our progress against similar groups but we just love to perform for the public and so our contest activities are very well balanced with public performance. We also have a great time together as one of our goals is to provide a place where men can gather and enjoy their interest in singing.
The Harbour Capital Chorus was formed in Wellington on February 4th, 1988 following pioneering work by the “Co-ordinated Chemists” Quartet for several years prior to that. The Harbour Capital Chorus has since grown to be one of New Zealand's most active Barbershop choruses. Its influence on New Zealand Barbershop singing has been highly significant:
- The first New Zealand Association of Barbershop Singers' (NZABS) Convention was hosted by it in Wellington in 1989.
- The Inter-Secondary School's competitions began in Wellington the following year.
- In 1996 the Harbour Capital Chorus, following it’s hosting of the national convention, was also the first Chorus in New Zealand to run a NZ Based Harmony College which is a week long residential Barbershop Music School.
- In 2004, following a successful evaluation performance at the annual Convention, a second Chorus, Vocal FX, initially for under-25 year olds was launched.
- In 2008, The Harbour Capital Chorus Chapter was renamed "Wellington Men's Barbershop Inc." and re-registered as a Chapter of of NZABS. This was to provide it's two performance choruses (Harbour Capital Chorus and Vocal FX) an umbrella for Legal Incorporation, Management and NZABS membership.
- In 2009, the very successful "Sounds Capital" convention was held in Wellington.
- In 2010, The Chapter name was changed from "Wellington Men's Barbershop Inc." to "Sounds Capital Inc." - to allow for a more "catchy" name to promote men's barbershop in the Wellington region.
The Harbour Capital Chorus has enjoyed a range of placings in annual competitions over the years. It has won National Gold, Silver, Bronze and Pan-Pacific Medals. The chorus is currently the 6th ranked chorus in New Zealand Open Division but are the 2012 National Small Chorus Champions (this is choruses that compete with under 20 singers at the national contest).
(Sounds Capital Inc. Chapters youth arm, Vocal FX Chorus, are the current National Open Contest Champions and are ranked number 7 on the International Contest stage.) less
