About Me
I have always loved being a part of a choir. I think it is a beautiful thing to take so many voices and blend them into one perfect instrument. My mother said that when I was around 2 or 3 she used to practice with her church choir and my twin sister and I would just stand in the middle of the aisle and stare and listen the whole practice time. I am 37 years old and have always wanted to be a choir director but do not know how to play the piano so I have put it off. I need to just learn or start getting back-up tapes for the kids at my church. I think choirs are a beautiful way to bring many types of people together.

Elizabeth Cain commented on Chris Rowbury's blog entry: And the choir sounds wonderful for not using any sheet music. I would probably be very lost if i did not know the song.

Elizabeth Cain commented on Chris Rowbury's blog entry: I think it is really neat that you teach parts without sheet music. My sister is a natural at harmonizing with anything. To bad you are over the ocean. :( I was looking for videos of the choir also.

Elizabeth Cain commented on Chris Rowbury's blog entry: So, when are you going to post what you do? i was reading your blogs and/or info and see that you don't use music scores to practice from. Did I read that right?

What I mean by that is that they are in it to be the next rock star or the next icon on many of the competition shows. Glee is a pretty popular show over hear in the states and other places as well,i think . And I wonder if it has helped bring back interest in choirs. But the problem with the show is that it is a show. It does not show you all the hard work it takes to be in a good choir. I have loved choirs since I was a baby.If my bio is on here then you would see what I mean by that. I talked to my mom about this too and she said she loves singing in a choir but can not stand the cattyness of some of the members. So she is taking a break for a short time. I think the idea of a choir needs to be "sold" to some kids now. I wish I had the answers. I am sure you have posters about town and adds put out there..Maybe you could pay a young student to help you with the graphics on a poster ... less

You would be surprised how many kids are well behaved and want to be there. I loved being a part of choirs and really enjoyed feeling like I was a part of something that was important to me that was outside of school . I think that if you did open it to younger ages only the kids who really enjoy it will be there..yes they are teens and can get a little bit giggly at times. But the older adults can be just as fun and silly too. I would try and find some home-schooled groups in your area and let them know of your choir and your plans. Many of these parents are trying to get their kids in extra-curricular activities and are usually required of them. If you are unsure of the young kids mixing in with the older adults have a separate group for learning different pieces and teach a few pieces of the same music to both groups. After both groups have learned the same music join them together for... less
