Its first members were students of the Club's Music School and many of them participated in the Youth Choir of the city of Heraklion, under the direction of Mrs. Katerina Tzagkaraki. the name of the ensemble originates from Thalitas, an ancient cretan composer and legislator, after whom a street in Heraklion is named; in this street the first rehearsals of the ensemble took place.
the ensemble's primary goal was to acquaint its members with the a cappella (“in the chapel”, without church organ accompaniment) vocal Music of the renaissance period. THALITAS began by studying and performing works of renowned composers of that era (e.g. Josquin des Prez, G. P. da Palestrina, Orlando di Lasso) to assist the learning process of its members' Musical studies. the Choir has performed in many prestigious venues in Europe, including Notre-Dame in Paris, Chartres cathedral and Versailles. Events such as the Prague Spring International Festival (Czech Republic) have also featured the Choir. In 2006, in Budapest, the Choir performed Tallis’s towering 40-part motet Spem in Alium, with the internationally renowned Budapest Monteverdi Choir. In 2008 the Choir enjoyed a trip to the Lisbon region and sang in some truly fantastic venues, including Mosteiro dos Jerónimos.

the Festival has two parts: competitive and non-competitive. However, the character and the main concept of both parts is joining Music, vacation, friendship and fun. the idea of the Festival is to bring the Music closer to the people and to present the Music on the streets and the squares of Paralia, Olympic Beach and Katerini. All Choir ensembles, regardless of the members’ gender and age can apply for participation at the Festival.

ABOUT the Choir:
Since 2009, the CWU Chamber Choir has held annual recording sessions to create videos specifically designed for YouTube. All are under the baton of Dr. Gary A. Weidenaar, who has been the director of the Choir since 2006.
