In the 1970s I visited Poland twice and fell in love with Polish choral music -- and Lulajże Jezuniu became one of my favourite Christmas carols in any language. While flying from Ottawa to Vancouver in December 2017, I felt inspired and arranged most of this piece while at 30,000 feet! I must have been quite a sight conducting away in my aisle seat, with my head phones plugged into my computer. I have dedicated Lulajże Jezuniu to the late Adam and Helena Kmiotek, who showed me such generosity of spirit as my hosts in Szczecin during my second Polish trip. It has become one of the most significant Czech music ensembles during its history and it is desired not only in the Czech Republic but also abroad. The ensemble is currently formed by these singers: Jakub Kubín (countertenor), Martin Ptáček (tenor), Lukáš Merkl (tenor), Radek Mach (tenor), Aleš Malý (baritone), Martin Struna (baritone), Richard Uhlíř (bass), and Václav Kovář (bass). The repertoire of the ensemble includes the periods from the Gregorian chant up till arrangements of modern popular melodies while the most important part is formed by the vocal compositions of the 19th and 20th century, Czech, Moravian and Slovak folk songs and contemporary compositions which were often arranged or even composed directly for the Gentlemen Singers by composers with whom the ensemble cooperates closely (e.g. Jan Vičar, Jaroslav Krček, Jan Jirásek, Stephen Hatfield, or Mark van Platen).
