Stephen Hatfield on Hard Shoulder: Written to honour the House of Compassion, a Toronto outreach to street people, Hard Shoulder is narrated by the street people themselves. Although there is no explicit language, the reality of life on the streets is still presented in an unvarnished way that hits audiences where they didn't expect to be hit. The struggle of the homeless, and of the people who wish to help them, is presented without platitudes, without sentimentality, and without easy answers, but the final message of the piece is humanitarian with a capital H.  less

It has grown to a higher level by achieving numerous titles within the past few years and also recognized as the best Tenor Bass voices from a school choir around the country. (Title gained 2014 onwards). The Choir has performed in National and International level stages (2012 Rome) and hosting many choral events in negombo including the biggest carol service in Negombo since 2007.(Maris Carols). It is trained by Mr. Francis De Almeida (Choral Director) since 2004. This choir has influences some youth choirs including Speranza , etc.... And also the Past Pupils Choir (The Old Maris Choir). The Choir is still hosting many Choral Events in Negombo. We think everyone can sing and complete beginners, shower Singers and pros are all welcome. With no auditions and no requirements to read music it’s all about the enjoyment of singing. We sing for 3 terms a year and each term ends with a fantastic end of term charity gig, it’s great to be able to give back to the local community whilst enjoying ourselves so much! We sing everything from Queen and Aretha Franklin to Hozier and Florence and the Machine, and have members ranging in age from 20-70, there is really something for everyone! This is our choir's 10th year and we're always looking for new members, so if you fancy a sing please get in touch. We offer 1 free taster to each new member so you can try the choir out before deciding to join. The choral programme starts with a general education for ages 5-7, before they are ready for Junior Choir (7-10), Intermediate Choir (10-13), Stage Choir or Youth Choir (13-18). Youth Choir contains over 80 Singers, and the total number of Singers meeting each week at the academy is over 180. The junior choirs are directed by Mrs Kate Venvell, Stage Choir is directed by Richard Halton and Julie Gossage, and Youth Choir is directed by Tim Venvell.  less
