The choir was founded in 1936 under the baton of William Morris. After him various conductors established the ensemble as an influential South African choir: Gawie Cillié (1940 - 1954) Philip McLachlan (1955 - 1976) Johan de Villiers (1977 - 1984) Acáma Fick (1985 - 1992) Sonja van der Walt (1993 - 2002) andré van der Merwe (2003 - ) The choir comprises of students from various academic courses and generally only a few members study music. The choir, an ensemble of approximately 80 – 100 voices, has won international acclaim through performances, concert tours, and participation in prestigious festivals and competitions. The choir is currently ranked 1st on the Interkultur World Ranking List for amateur choirs. Called a “mighty fortress of skill” by the Washington Post, the Wartburg choir is one of three college musical ensembles that tour internationally on a triennial basis. Beyond tours, the choir receives invitations for special appearances in the United States and abroad, most recently to participate in the December 2011 White House Holiday Concert Series. As part of that trip to Washington, D.C., the choir also sang at the National Cathedral’s Bethlehem Prayer Service, which was simulcast worldwide. Since its foundation, the choir is in continuous improvement and has been involved in many workshops with Prof.Mustafa Apaydın which were organized twice a year. The choir has a mixed membership including music teachers, musicians and amateur choir singers. The choir’s name is inspired by the famous story written by William Shakespeare and Guiseppe Verdi’s famous opera called Othello and the Othello Castle which is located in the city of Famagusta. The city where the choir is based is known as “Othello’s City Famagusta” all around the world.
