In 1820, Daly was wrongfully accused of shooting at a local landowner and condemned to hang. Although the local population acclaimed him as a hero and attempted to help him escape the gallows, he went quietly to his death. "Anthony! Since your limbs were laid out, the stars do not shine! The fish leap, not out in the waves! On our meadows, the dew does not fall in the morn, for O’Daly is dead!" Barber’s song feels like a huge public outpouring of grief. It begins with the basses repeating Anthony’s name on a drone whilst the upper voices sing a keening melody, and the piece builds to hysteria as the sopranos and Altos take over the chanted name. PG Carnivalesque" under the patronage of Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, rector of Gdańsk Tech, attracted several hundred people who listened to daring performances of popular pop music hits. During the performance we heard Choral arrangements of hits such as: "Dancing Queen", "Memory", "California Dreamin'" and "Maria". This time it was not Mozart or Bach, but ABBA, Queen and songs from the musical West Side Story that graced the walls of the Gdansk University of Technology in carnivalesque musical artistic creations. Jazz musicians performed along with the choir, and the musical effects were accompanied by a unique lighting arrangement, which required appropriate space and audience arrangement. It is meant, no pun intended, to be a musical lark, great fun for a choir to sing, rolling Rs like crazy, with no holding back. NB: One day I woke up to the realization that I had independently written four Choral works, each of which had evoked a different season, and so it seemed natural to group them together into a Choral suite that I have called "The Ottawa Four Seasons Suite." "Let's sing, it's Spring!", with its rousing coda section, works perfectly as the closing number of this suite. Also of note, in early 2018, I applied to be a participant at one of the Vancouver Chamber Choir's Interplay workshops funded by the SOCAN Foundation and to my delight I was accepted.
