The University Chorale is the touring ensemble for the choral department. The ensemble performs a wide spectrum of the finest choral literature. The group performs extensively throughout the Southwest and will be singing at several venues in Washington D.C. during December of 2013. The group primarily consists of vocal music majors, however, there are singers representing several other academic disciplines. The University Chorale has been under the direction of J. Steven Walker since 1984. Dr. Walker is the Director of Choral Activities and a Linscheid Distinguished Teaching Professor at East Central University. He has served on the music faculty at ECU since 1983.  less

The Choir is made up of undergraduate and graduate students auditioned from all faculties and grades and performs several Concerts every year, and at important University ceremonies. Participation always begins in the Fall semester, and continues all the way to graduation commencement in June. The Choir performed in joint Concerts with Choirs from Duke University, Yale University, Harvard University, Perugia University and Missouri Drury University.  less

Thompson. The 40-80 member A Cappella Choir offers freshman and sophomore singers the opportunity to perform works for larger Choirs and to fine-tune the art of choral singing through exposure to music from the Renaissance through the 21st century. In daily rehearsals, Choir members hone musicianship skills such as rhythm, sight-reading and the understanding of complex scores. They develop an understanding of the intricacies of vocal production, including pitch and how to blend individual voices together into a unified, beautiful sound. Finally, members learn how to sing in an ensemble and to successfully meld as a team. The Choir frequently performs with other School of Music ensembles, including the Utah Philharmonia orchestra, the Wind Ensemble, the Chamber Choir and Women’s Chorus. This smallest and most select of the Hofstra Choirs comprises the best singers at the University, both within and outside the Department of Music, and focuses on the distinct art of unaccompanied, or a cappella, ensemble singing, presented in carefully chosen performance spaces that are uniquely attuned to celebrate the human voice's potential. From an educational standpoint, the ensemble serves two main functions for the University.
