We think everyone can sing and complete beginners, shower singers and pros are all welcome. With no auditions and no requirements to read Music it’s all about the enjoyment of singing. We sing for 3 terms a year and each term ends with a fantastic end of term charity gig, it’s great to be able to give back to the local community whilst enjoying ourselves so much! We sing everything from Queen and Aretha Franklin to Hozier and Florence and the Machine, and have members ranging in age from 20-70, there is really something for everyone! This is our Choir's 10th year and we're always looking for new members, so if you fancy a sing please get in touch. We offer 1 free taster to each new member so you can try the Choir out before deciding to join. With members graduated from Hong Kong traditional Schools like Diocesan Boys’ School, Belilios Public School, St. Paul’s Coeducation College, Ying Wa Girls’ School, St. Stephen’s Girls’ College, St. Paul’s College, Wah Yan College Kowloon, and also universities like the Hong Kong University and the Chinese University, the group was immediately invited by the HKSAR government to a celebration performance in early July 2010. The group also presented a standard professional program of sacred Music in its first concert “Inspiratio” in August 2010, and a themed concert, featuring a range of masterpieces of Chinese Choral Music,「聲．華」in August 2011, which won critical acclaim from local Music conductors, composers and Musicians. Gospel Choir is based in Essex, but occasionally strays beyond! Celebrating our tenth anniversary in 2013, the Choir was formed in 2003 after director Jen and accompanist Jane were missing taking part in Music, having left university. Starting well, with about 15 members the Choir has fluctuated in size, settling early on into a Choir of 8. In 2010 however, the Choir doubled in size and we are pleased that this core of almost 20 people has stuck! Choir members range from 7 years old to 77! We are a sociable bunch with an emphasis on singing for fun. We don’t put people through an audition and being able to read Music isn’t necessary. A good third of the Choir don't read Music. Being able to sing in tune is an advantage though! We have performed at weddings and parties across Essex and Suffolk, for the Women's Institute, local churches, at fetes, town open nights and charity concerts at the Mercury, Headgate and Towngate theatres. The text is adapted from the E.E. Cummings poem of the same name. Composer Gwyneth Walker writes: "This is a poem of grandeur and of praise. Therefore it might be expected that this Musical setting would aim at vastness, grandeur and awakening." Walker accomplishes this through a variety of means. First, the piano introduction includes slowly unfolding piano arpeggios which focus on open intervals of octaves, fifths and fourths, exploiting the full range of the piano keyboard. The composer also takes the singers on a harmonic journey which begins in a low register in C minor, and then travels through a number of other key areas until it reaches the distant key of G-flat. At this point, the voices are drawn closely together into a tone cluster containing the pitches G-flat, A-flat and B-flat, only to open apart into the glorious C major chords which conclude the ...    less
